JibberJobber Competition
JibberJobber Competition Over three years ago I knew about direct competition. Im not talking about spreadsheets, Im talking about companies who have websites that are very similar to JibberJobber. I havent blogged about competition for a few reasons, but it makes sense to blog about them now. The first competitor launched the week after we did, in May of 2006. It was called Isabont, but has since been renamed to Virtual Job Coach. I had a phone conversation with the founder that November and found him to be a nice person. For a while it was just Isabont and JibberJobber we did a lot of stuff the same, and I tried to watch what they were doing. Over time I heard about other sites that were considered competition we watched all of them, wondering who was going to do what. Regularly when I am on the road speaking I hear about a new competitor coming out it has happened across the country most recently from someone from my hometown (lol). Today I got the following Contact Us message (this is the entire message): I have known about Red Salsa for a while, and figured someone had hired them to develop a competitive system. Someone at Red Salsa told their team to get JibberJobber accounts so they could reverse engineer the system (or, as the message above says, copy the features). I sent an email to Red Salsa and asked them what was up, but of course got no reply. It is unfortunate that companies cant create their own stuff, and use unethical/deceptive means to reverse engineer someone elses intellectual property. Id love to know who is behind this (is it Red Salsa or someone else), and what they plan to do. I wish them well as they enter this market with about 10 other competitors. I think I can only do one thing about my competition (outperform them and gain a critical mass of users/evangelists) what do you think I should do? What Makes a Good Business Person
What Makes a Good Business Person Running a business, whether itâs an entrepreneurial effort or an established business, takes certain skills. According to Sukanto Tanoto, business owners should be able to face and overcome any challenges, make the business grow and always be looking for more opportunities. Some Qualities a Good Business Person May Need Business is a big subject and includes hundreds of industries with different levels of business managers. To be a top business leader, there are some qualities that canât be ignored. ⢠Leadership is much more than being the boss. A good leader can command a room and everyone in there wants to know what he or she is saying. They can inspire a team of associates or employees to want to perform at their best. ⢠Courage means a leader is not afraid to take risks. They should always maintain the entrepreneurial spirit and be able to see opportunities to take the business to the next level and beyond. ⢠Competition is the heart and soul of many, if not all, businesses, and a good business person wants to win. They need to stay in the forefront of their industry and do better than their competing businesses. ⢠Good business people need to be smart. They should not be single-minded towards one aspect of life, but have knowledge and experience in other areas such as history, politics, economics, technology and other areas that will give them a global perspective. This is the basis of creativity and gives them confidence when they do need to take risks. ⢠A good leader and a good employee will always be willing to take the initiative in any endeavor. They understand what it means to take responsibility for their actions and are willing to step up when required. They embrace failure and make sure it never happens again. ⢠It may sound like a cliché, but is true none the less. A good business person must have good communication skills for the highest efficiency. They need to be able to get their points and ideas across to others in a clear and uncomplicated fashion. This means they must communicate effectively when speaking and in writing. ⢠Ambition is essential in a good business person. They must have goals and actively work towards them with whatever it takes, within legal limits. There goal setting is realistic and aligned to their strengths. ⢠Good business people are reliable whether they are the CEO or in the mail room. They can be counted on for whatever task they undertake. ⢠Professional and personal integrity are essential for a person to be a successful business person. He or she is always fair, respectable, responsible and ethical in all of their transactions. They are life-long learners who are constantly learning new things and have new experiences. Theyâre not afraid to fail. This is also the foundation for great managerial traits. ⢠Along with good communication skills, a likeable personality could overcome some other areas that are lacking. Employees, colleagues and superiors all appreciate a person who is a pleasure to do business with and who they respect. They attract employees, customers and friends with whom they are happy to work. Whether in an office meeting or an office party, you have to carry yourself well and be able to strike a conversation and let your personality shine through. A book I recommend to read, if you need help, is [amazon template=productasin=B006YTTVHO] . If you believe that you have all or most of these qualities, you can feel confident to charge ahead with your business objectives and be reasonably confident that you will be a success.

Why a Strong Ethos Could Help With Mental Health
Why a Strong Ethos Could Help With Mental Health The words âtoxicâ has been catapulted into the mainstream over the past few years. So much so that it was 2018âs word of the year, showing how itâs truly infiltrated its way into our vernacular. While in its truest form it may relate to substances, it is now commonly associated with culture, an area thatâs been plaguing employers up and down the country for years. Thereâs no doubt workplace culture is important. We spend so much time at work that we need something to get us out of bed, and company culture is a significant part of this. The issue is that many employers donât understand how deep culture runs and how much of an influence and impact it has on employee satisfaction and loyalty. This has led to the rise of âtoxicâ work cultures, while other more commercial aspects of the business (i.e. sales, sales, sales) take priority. But to be truly successful in todayâs highly competitive marketplace, businesses need to give culture the respect and attention it deserves or suffer the costly consequences of low employee engagement and high turnover. With industries where the vast majority of the workforces work in non-desk roles (i.e. retail store associates, hotel staff, waiters/waitresses, bartenders, facilities management staff, customer support), employees tend to work long hours (sometimes up to 6-7 days a week, 10-12 hours per shift). When you add in the always-on nature of digital and mobile devices, and the expectations they have created for employees to be available 24/7, mental health is getting more and more attention. With mental health problems estimated to cost organizations £42 billion a year, itâs no wonder that UK UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock is now putting pressure on employers to take better care of their employees, and in turn, help them find the right balance and stay mentally healthy. While many factors influence employeesâ mental health (workload, pressure, commute), how an employee feels about work, and the culture surrounding them plays an equally important role. To understand this more, we surveyed US and UK employees to understand what culture means to them, as well as cultureâs role in improving employee loyalty and retention, in order to do exactly what UK Health Secretary is pushing for â" to help companies take better care of their employees (and their mental health). So why not take a look at what employees really value to help drive a positive and inclusive environment? Culture is not brewed on perks When talking about workplace culture, fun almost always comes up because, letâs face it, if youâre having fun, then youâre more likely to be happier and do a better job. As such, numerous employers have latched onto this and have introduced superficial perks, such as drinks trollies, ping pong tables, video gaming rooms, free meals and more. As part of our recent research into the role of culture on employee loyalty, we asked the UK respondents to specify the most important attribute of a strong workplace culture. Interestingly, the answers were quite the opposite of the aforementioned superficial perks. Instead, the following attributes ranked highest â" respect and fairness (45 percent), trust and integrity (24 percent) and teamwork (8 percent). The reality is that these types of perks may seem fun âin the momentâ and for a short period of time. They donât do anything to foster a culture or environment of fairness, transparency, trust, and respect. Thereâs also the millennial challenge to consider. With employees in this age bracket making up such a significant proportion of the workforce, employers (whether they like it or not) need to be aware of what matters to this diverse group. Millennials care more about finding a sense of personal fulfillment and purpose in their work (not just another paycheck). And they set the bar exceptionally high in terms of their expectations for experiences â" be it as a customer or as an employee. This is where building a culture thatâs founded on the principles and values of trust, integrity, respect, and fairness can go a long way to keep employees feeling mentally strong and healthy, while also helping them feel the sense of fulfillment and purpose they so crave and want. Donât lose the loyalty battle Our research into workplace culture also flagged up another interesting finding about just how far employees will go to be part of a good culture. Over half (58 percent) said theyâd take a job at a competing company if it had a better culture. Perhaps the biggest eye-opener was that 48 percent of the UK respondents were willing to work a 60-hour week rather than work for a company that doesnât value culture. Thatâs one in four employees who said theyâd sacrifice culture for shorter hours and another quarter were on the fence. These findings paint a fairly bleak picture of employee satisfaction and loyalty. Attracting talent is expensive and time-consuming for all involved, and itâs within everyoneâs interests for candidates to stick around. To enable this, culture evidently needs addressing before itâs too late â" as employees will go to great lengths to feel part of the gang. Donât underestimate the power of job security Amidst all the industry talk about culture and engagement, sometimes the basics of job security and benefits get lost behind other more important attributes. But that doesnât mean they are any less important or should be prioritized any less. The data from our study supports this, with job security ranking as the clear winner (68 percent rated it as having a high impact) when we asked the global respondents to specify how much of an impact various factors have on their job satisfaction. In todayâs zero-hours, gig economy culture, the fact that employees want a stable job is an interesting one. Itâs perhaps not surprising given the economic and job instability resulting from Brexit. What this shows is that again, perks matter less â" as do training and development opportunities. Whilst these are obviously critical to a fully rounded employee experience, employers, HR teams and recruiters should pay close attention to these findings. Safety at work isnât just about feeling safe to give feedback or be their authentic selves at work. Job safety, as our study reveals, can also help employees feel wanted, appreciated and ultimately, contribute positively to their mental health. Be the change you wish to see⦠Every employer knows you canât change your workplace culture in a day, a week, or even a month. But you can put the building blocks in place to start changing perceptions for the better. Culture can make or break a brand â" Uber, Volkswagen, Wells Fargo â" all of these have suffered reputationally and financially for issues, which ultimately boiled down to poor and toxic cultures, showing the biggest and best donât always get everything right. Culture is what you make of it, but one thing is for sure â" employees want to work for companies that invest in them â" and not just financially. In a time when arguably employers demand more from their staff than ever before, giving a little back doesnât hurt. Did You Miss Your Calling in Life
Did You Miss Your Calling in Life The importance of pursuing meaningful work has received a lot of attention in the press in recent years. We want more from work than material benefits; we want our work to be personally rewarding. Meaningful work is that which has a purpose in the broader context of ones life, and may be done for personal fulfilment or the greater good and is associated with positive health, life, and job-related outcomes. Do you sometimes think that you missed your true calling in life? If so, it would be a good idea to do something about it, according to research published in the Journal of Vocational Behaviour. An unanswered calling leads to poorer life outcomes than having no vocation at all, and may even harm your health. We know that people who follow an occupational calling have better outcomes than those who donât. But authors Michele Gazica and Paul Spector of the University of South Florida found those who had a calling that they never pursued were suffering as a result. This was based on Self-Determination Theory, which says that we are motivated to follow paths that lead us to be autonomous and competent within âourâ field, but the flipside of that is that we can be left frustrated when we feel we have fallen short. Working for a fulfilled life The researchers surveyed a sample of hundreds of participants, who were split into groups based on their responses: those with a higher sense of unanswered calling than the average, those with a higher sense of having answered their calling, and those with no strong sense of either. Participants provided feedback on a range of measures, and in terms of a fulfilled life-engagement with work, career commitment, and life satisfaction those who answered a vocation were better off than the no-calling group, who were still better off than those with an unanswered calling; this last group rated themselves as the least fulfilled. Those with an unanswered calling also rated themselves lowest in terms of physical stress symptoms and psychological distress. In health terms, therefore, the research suggests that it isnât that a vocation helps you so much as that ignoring it hurts you. The authors of the study confirm that causality canât be confirmed. In fact, there is reason to think that the perception of having another calling can be a consequence as well as a cause of unhappiness (the worst work period of your life might well be when you cast around for what you were really born to do). Mid-career rethink What should you do if youâre hearing the call of a new life and career? A mid-career rethink of the kind of work you want do, as well as who you want to work for, may mean transitioning to entrepreneurship from traditional employment. You can leverage your years of experience in a new entrepreneurial venture, or look for a role in a new field. The first question to ask is What holds meaning for me? If a new start is not possible, perhaps you can improve your situation by reshaping the job you have to include those aspects that really matter to you, or find a leisure activity that captures your passions. Traditional career paths are a thing of the past and we change jobs much more often these days, about once every four years, apparently; since most adults spend more than half their waking lives at work it is worth making the right choice. The idea that we have to choose a single career path and stick with it from start to finish is simply no longer true. For an agile approach to your career it helps if you commit to being a lifelong learner and continue to update your skills and knowledge to stay versatile, entrepreneurial, and competitive.

Interview Series - Career Experts - JM Auron from Quantum Tech Resumes CareerMetis.com
Interview Series - Career Experts - JM Auron from Quantum Tech Resumesâ" CareerMetis.com In this interview series, we caught up with JM Auron from Quantum Tech Resumeswho shares her expertise and insights about job search, career change, etc. in todayâs marketplace.Tell us a little bit about your companyevalI started Quantum Tech Resumes several years ago after a couple of earlier, more general iterations in the resume writing space.I enjoy working with technologists and have the skill to communicate the real business value of what my clientsâ"from CIOs / CTOs to hands-on technical professionalsâ"can deliver. That ability to include the right amount of technical detailâ"without overwhelming the readerâ"is a big part of what I bring to the table. How did you get started in this path?My ex-wife was a Java developer, and not getting calls.Iâd always been a writer, so I wrote her a resume 20 years ago. Now, Iâm sure Iâd cringe were I to see it today, but it got her interviews, and she got some kudos from interviewers. As they say. The rest is history. Is this somethi ng you decided early on in your career? No, I canât say that I wanted to be a resume writer when I was in third grade.Like many people in this field, I did a number of things, and, when I found I was good at helping clients with my skills as a resume writer, I transitioned into the business full time. That was more than a decade ago. What is the Best Career Advice Youâve ever received? That the people happiest in their careers spend their time on things they both enjoy and are skilled at.evalWhat is the most exciting part of working in thisindustry?Receiving the emails from clients telling me that they just landed a great jobâ"often after months or years with no previous traction.A client recently had been looking for a couple of years, and after we worked together, he got something that was a perfect fit.He told me Iâd changed his life. Thatâs a good feeling! How do to stay abreast of the industry as an expert?I learn a lot from my clients.Since I donât use worksheets or ques tionnaires, but gather all my data through an in-depth interview, Iâm able to keep very current with emerging trends in technology. What are some of the things that you see job seekers struggle with the most? With my clients, itâs frequently defining and articulating their value proposition: knowing and communicating the value that they really bring to a new company.I work very closely with my clients to help them clarify what differentiates them in the marketplaceâ"and that time is well spent. It not only enables me to craft the best possible resumeâ"but it helps my clients present themselves clearly and confidently in the interview. What are the common mistakes that you see them do?Over-qualifying opportunitiesâ"only applying to jobs that look âperfectââ"rather than applying to a range of opportunities that may be interesting. How should job seekers approach job search today?Be proactive.A job search is hard work and can take time. But a proactive approach to uncovering new opportunitiesâ"with the strong follow-up requiredâ"can help make the process a lot shorter. What is the biggest trend(s) you see that job seekers will face in the next 2-3 years?Thereâs no way to predict that. Within the world of tech, some skills are definitely growing in importance, and others becoming less critical. But thereâs always unpredictable disruption in the marketplace. I think itâs better to build a solid career rather than bank on a trend that may or may not happen. What is one advice you would give someone just out of college today?Keep a record of your achievements from day 1 of your careerâ"and always think CAR / Challenge Action Results at every stage of your career. What is one advice you would give someone who is switching careers?Be certain that the career change is both something you really want to doâ"and something you can realistically do.How should job seekers get the most out of LinkedIn?Get to at least 500 connections, get a good headshot, and get a strong profile that describes who you areâ"culturally as well as technically.Unemployment is at the lowest levels, why do you think that is?Thatâs an extremely complex question. But whether unemployment is high or low, one needs to look at oneâs own careerâ"and take a strategic approach. What is the biggest trend(s) you see that hiring managers will face in the next 2-3 years? There will continue to be a lot of very qualified candidates. So the issue will be ensuring that one selects from a strong talent pool.JM, what are you currently working on?Iâm always busy, and always have a number of concurrent client projects to work on.Iâd like to write a book on the state of software developmentâ"but thatâs for the future. What are the best resources you recommend to job seekers?Strategy (BH Liddell Hart)What is the best way for our audience to reach you?Through our website.Connect with or Follow JM Auron on Social Media:LinkedInTwitterJM Auron and Quantum TechResumeshave also bee n featured in our recent compilation of the most resourceful career experts and career blogs â" Top Career Advice Websites.
